The red earth of Australia has long been a great source of inspiration in my work. There’s something deeply grounding about its warm, ochre tones, they radiate a sense of calm and comfort when brought into interior spaces, creating a quiet connection to the land.

I’ve journeyed to Central Australia several times - first back in 1998 when I arrived in Australia, again with my family years later, and most recently on an unforgettable art retreat with my dear friend and sculptor, Dominique Sutton. Each visit offered a new perspective, yet all shared that same unmistakable sense of place - vast, ancient, and humbling - a connection with the outside nature and the inside of say a home.

TRAVEL NOTES

That connection to nature is something I always strive to weave into my projects. At Copperstone, I used warm earthen plasters across walls and ceilings, echoing the soft, sculptural forms of Uluru. The surfaces feel almost wind-smoothed, like the sandstone giants of the desert, shaped over time. It’s in these quiet details that a space can reflect the soul of the land.
